What are the benefits of planting native plants?

  • Native plants require less maintenance since they are evolved for the local climate, geography, and soil.
  • This means they do not need to be watered, and can often survive droughts or floods.
  • By transforming a section of lawn into a wildflower garden, we reduce the energy spent mowing and fertilizing that section of lawn.

Native species have been growing together for thousands, if not millions of years.  Each ecosystem is made of organisms specially evolved to both compete and cooperate with each other.  New organisms may be introduced to an ecosystem, but usually do not find much success unless that ecosystem has recently been disturbed.

Unfortunately, humans have recently been doing exactly that – cutting down forests and replacing them with roads and suburbs, while also spreading the seeds of exotic plants, both intentionally and by accident.  This sudden change to the local environment is havoc for the whole food chain – the insects, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians that have always made this area their home.

Luckily, humans can also heal this habitat by planting native plants in areas where they will do well and removing invasives when needed.

BHD Regenerative Landscaping is committed to helping native plants and wildlife recover from these massive changes in the landscape.

A few examples of popular native plants:

  • Milkweed (Asclepias) – Essential food for Monarch caterpillars, the silk from the seed pods can be used for crafts.
  • Coneflower (Echinacea) – Beautiful flowers.  In autumn you can watch the goldfinches land on them to eat the seeds.  The roots have medicinal properties.
  • Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium) – Tall flowering plant popular with butterflies, dwarf varieties are also available.
  • Sunflowers (Helianthus) – seeds are eaten by both humans and animals.
